Under Section 17 of the Registration Act, 1908 a lease of immovable property from year to year, or for a term exceeding 11 months, must be compulsorily registered. Shorter terms may be registered voluntarily.

For a lease of up to 1 year, stamp duty is broadly 1.5% of the annual rent plus deposit.
