Goa

In Goa the instrument is a Rent Agreement (Lease Deed), the parties are called Lessor and Lessee, and the tenancy is read against the Goa, Daman and Diu Buildings (Lease, Rent and Eviction) Control Act, 1968.

Registration mandate

Under Section 17 of the Registration Act, 1908 a lease of immovable property from year to year, or for a term exceeding 11 months, must be compulsorily registered. Shorter terms may be registered voluntarily.

Compulsory from 12 months

How the cost is worked out

Stamp duty is 0.5% of (total rent for the term + the security deposit).

Minimum stamp duty: ₹100

Local practice tips

  • State the purpose clearly - holiday lets are treated differently from residential tenancies.
  • A panchayat NOC is often requested for long stays in village areas.
